The Corn Bread

The sacred grain of corn. The sacred grain of the Mayans. The crop plant resembling humans according to their Cosmovision about the creation and the plant that is directly connecting us to the Earth and the natural world. A sacred link embodying the cyclical nature of life with the death and rebirth, mirroring the life cycle of the corn.

Golden like the hot summer sun or taking different colours from white, to black and red like all human races on this Earth and like the colours representing the four directions

The subsistence crop that sustained the Greek folk against famine during the war when no other grain was available.

The corn bread, the subsistence bread of the Greek folk during the time of war in the cities.

A one day retreat of immersion into the spirit of the corn and into making one of the most important breads of subsistence from the recent Greek history.

A container to meet deeply with the essence of the corn in an holistic and innovative embodied way.

A prayer by the Mayan corn grain keepers opening the sacred space of community and communion.

A ritual to explore the corn as an ingredient and learn how to make breads in alternative ways, beyond the grain of wheat.

A ritual blending together two worlds, demonstrating that we are one, living at the same home and requiring the same basic resources to survive.

We are crafting one ancestral subsistence recipe in togetherness. We handcraft corn bread in connection to our bodies through our senses, to the body of the Earth and the sacred grain of corn.
We share the bread we crafted and we consume it during a conscious eating practice.

We honour together the connection to our bodies, our nourishment and the Earth.

By the end of the day you will leave with your own corn bread loaf and you will be able to make your own corn bread at home! You will feel more connected to your body and to the way you want to be nourished.

In the early days of April they would sow the corn and they would harvest it by September. During the summer days they would sustain the corn plant with water from the well or from the river. After the harvest they would bring the grain to the mill and they would get the corn flour. The thin powder would be destined for the family and the coarse parts for the homestead animals. They would mix the corn flour with warm water, they would mix it with a wooden spoon and they would knead it. Once the wooden oven was fired, they would bake it for half hour. This would be ‘mpompota’ the corn bread of the poor greek folk.”

TESTIMONIALS

Judit B. // HUNGARY

‘I had the honour to participate in Alexandra’s food rituals many times. I was surprised how deep you can go when you are relaxed, intentional, and present with food, when you stop to listen…
Listen to what and how your body craves to touch, smell, hear and taste, instead of focusing too much on sight. Bringing in all the senses to turn to a more instinctual, intuitive and deeper knowing of the needs of my cells, my soma.

It is a reconnection to something that is lost with conceptual, overanalysed and pragmatic eating. I came into contact with memories and feelings that weren’t related to food or eating. They were brought to the surface by a smell or a texture, and I felt in awe of the profundity of the remembrance.

Meeting myself in these new ways, felt like little awakenings and I became more conscious of the complexity of myself and found a new devotional practice in nourishing my body.

This kind of reconnection is especially fruitful for women who were robbed of the wholesome bond with food and their bodies by diet fads and beauty standards.

‘The sourdough bread workshop has moved me beyond the art of bread making. It has been an encounter with the power of female energy accompanied by the journey to the essence of Mother Earth. I would recommend this event to every woman who wants to reconnect with the female energy and get inspired by the presence of a fantastic artist and guide - Alexandra.’.

Poulcheria M. // GREECE

‘After giving a few days to myself to digest and fully understand what I learnt in this illuminating and deep workshop that Alexandra visualised and gave birth to, very naturally this philosophical question came to me as the aftertaste of this dual experience of the body's and soul's nourishment : “ will you keep breadcrumbing yourself when you now know how to create a bread from the scratch?”. Thank you Alexandra!
I will always treasure this experience’.

Jana D. // UK

‘This work of the weekend felt life changing. Coming back to this ceremonial way of being in communion to prepare our meals, to share our stories and taste our food together slowly and intentionally, with reverence for what we were eating, brought me in touch with my body and relationship with food as it hasn’t done before’.

Nikoletta M. // Athens, GREECE

‘It was an especially beautiful, rich in knowledge and emotion creative experience that I would like to relive soon again! I was not expecting to witness, experience and taste so much. Thank you so much Alexandra!’

Sonia V. // PORTUGAL

“The experience was very well worth it. I have most definitely appreciated the mystical communion between women, the ingredients, and the process. Obrigado!”
